Hand Washing Saves Lives

Posted: April 8th, 2020

Clean hands can help prevent sickness. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourages five basic and effective steps: Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, and Dry. These steps can decrease the spread of many illnesses including the flu and Covid-19. Washing your hands especially prior to and after certain activities, is a great way to wash away germs, prevent sickness and stop the spread of germs to others. It’s a simplistic and fast approach that can keep you and others from becoming sick. Below are some guidelines:

1. Wash your hands with soap and water frequently for at least 20 seconds especially:

• After using the toilet

• After changing diapers or potty training

• After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing

• Prior to preparing food

• Prior to eating

If soap and water is unavailable, carry a bottle of hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

2. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Ifa doorknob, toy or other surface has a virus on them, you could be infected if you touch the surface and then your face. A virus can get inside your body through your nose, mouth or eyes.

3. Stay away from people who are sick. Most diseases are often spread to others when the sick person coughs or sneezes. Try to avoid getting too close to the sick person until they are not contagious which could take many days. It is good practice to limit close contact with others (about 6 feet). Also, stay home if you or someone in your household is sick except if you need medical care. This will prevent the spread of sickness to others.

Remember education and practicing preventative measures is the key to staying healthy and stopping the spread of disease to others in your household or community. For more information contact the CDC at https://www.cdc.gov/  or https://govstatus.egov.com/kycovid19 or call the CDC Hot Line at 1-800-722-5725.
