Holiday Stress Can Affect Your Skin

The Holiday season is upon us, and for many that means cold weather, Christmas caroling and Santa, but for others it means stressful days. Sometimes the hustle and bustle of the season can cause people to experience those “holiday blues.” Stress takes a toll on the body, both physically and psychologically, and can cause skin problems as well.

When people become stressed, stress hormones (cortisol) in our bodies increase. This can cause oily skin and inflammation which can lead to acne, and many other skin problems such as rosacea, psoriasis, hives, and rashes. People who are stressed may be more prone to develop fever blisters, and may become more sensitive to allergies and irritants.  Skin stress can cause dark circles under the eyes, which can be the result of low moisture especially living in cold conditions and being exposed to indoor heat. Many people experience hair loss and nail problems too.

Here are some tips to reduce the effects of stress:

  • Identify the primary problem that can trigger your stress.
  • Regular exercise helps relieve stress by releasing endorphins in your body. Meditation, yoga, keeping a journal and taking time every week to personally relax is helpful too.
  • Keep an organized calendar of events and parties and try not to overextend yourself.
  • Get enough sleep—lack of it can exaggerate life’s stressful moments.
  • Eat nutritious food, and limit sweets, junk food, and caffeine.
  • Holiday drinking can add to dry, puffy skin and dark circles under the eyes especially if you have an extra glass or two. Using a cold pack for 5 -7 minutes the next morning can reduce the swelling. Applying a richer, more emollient moisturizer to your skin can help relieve dryness and dark circles.
