Winter Skin Care Tips: Part 1

Posted: February 5th, 2020

Winter can take a toll on skin. The dry, indoor heat, along with lower humidity, layered clothing, hot showers and baths can cause dry skin. All these reasons along with numerous other environmental, behavioral, and chronological factors, play a role in how well your skin fairs during the blustery months. Itchy, flaky, chaffed, cracked, and older-looking skin can contribute to the wintertime blues. The following tips can help keep you and your skin healthy and happy during the winter.

Why Winter Skin?
The lack of moisture in the skin causes wrinkles and lines to be more apparent, and the dry, dead skin cells on the upper layer of your skin clump together forming visible flakes. This combined with the skin cracking from dryness can also cause the itching and redness. Aside from being unattractive, winter skin can cause discomfort and sometimes infection can develop in the cracking skin.

Do an About Face—Face Care
Wash your face with lukewarm, not hot, water and a mild facial cleanser. If you have oily skin, don’t assume that you need a moisturizer. Wait 20 minutes after washing, and if your face feels tight, use a moisturizer only where you feel dry.
If you use prescription treatments for acne or other facial conditions, talk with your dermatologist about switching to more moisturizing versions of your formulation, especially if you use retinoid products.
Avoid using alcohol-based products on the skin, such as toners. If they are needed to treat acne, apply them only on the areas that need treatment.
Continue wearing sunscreen during the winter months. Snow can reflect more than 80% of the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation. It’s important to always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, especially on exposed body parts such as the face, hands, and tops of the ears. Reapply sunscreen every two hours for maximum benefit.

Kiss Winter Skin Goodbye—Lip Care
Look for certain ingredients in lip treatments such as shea butter, jojoba oil, avocado oil, mango oil, and lip balm. Remember licking lips causes them to become drier. Wear a lip balm with an SPF of 15to help prevent chapped lips and remember reapply every two hours for maximum benefit.
